Basketball scholarships to the USA are hugely popular around the world because not only do they provide a high school student with a world class education, but they also give them four years to compete at the highest level with a shot for those good enough to go professional.
To be awarded a college basketball scholarship is certainly not an easy task and student-athletes must be exceptionally good, especially if they are an international student. Possessing a good physical size alongside agility and speed are key factors, as are solid game statistics and match experience.
As with most sports, basketball scholarship opportunities vary considerably depending on each student-athletes athletic and academic ability. The players that possess the better stats and experience (nationally and internationally) and have maintained higher academic grades receive the larger athletic scholarship offers from college coaches.
In the NCAA Division one mens college basketball programs, there are 13 full athletic scholarships per team to spread out amongst its squad, with amounts typically ranging from a full 100% to 25% in financial aid.
The womens NCAA Division one basketball programs due to the Title IX rule in college sport, universities often have 15 full athletic scholarships available to spread out amongst its team. In the NCAA Division two, NAIA and NJCAA these athletic scholarship amounts vary.
Academic student-athletes that have strong high school grades also have the possibility of being able to receive academic scholarships as well to help with their families financial commitment.
