Track and Field scholarships to the USA are an excellent pathway for student-athletes that allows them to continue developing within their chosen discipline whilst they study and earn a world class education.

College track and field is a hugely popular sport in America, which they consistently rank as the very best at at every Olympic games.   The US college system has proven to be the perfect platform for this success, with numerous athletes coming through after they have competed at college over the four years.

In fact Stanford University alone won 25 medals at the Beijing Olympics, which if they were a country would of placed them 11th tied with Japan on the overall medals table!
 

The reason for their success is because the college route provides student-athletes with a positive atmosphere to develop both physically and mentally in a team environment, where they regularly train and compete against some of the best athletes in the world.  It is little wonder then that student athletes across the globe are choosing the US because for those fortunate enough to be able to pursue it, a track and field scholarship that can potentially cover all of the students costs, going alongside their athletic development and education it is an incredible opportunity.

Track and field scholarship opportunities vary considerably depending on each student athletes athletic and academic ability, with college coaches typically looking for a strong combination of the two in order to put an attractive financial aid package together.  The students who possess the better times/ranking/results (nationally and internationally) and have maintained the higher academic grades are usually the ones who receive the larger athletics scholarship offers.

Mens Track and Field Scholarships 

In the NCAA Division one there are currently 278 college track and field programs and of these the coaches are generally allowed to offer a maximum of 12.6 full athletic scholarships to spread out amongst its squad, with amounts  ranging from a full 100% to 25% in financial aid.  

The NCAA division two, which at the higher end are just as strong as most division one colleges has 151 programs around the country, with coaches being able to offer the same as division one with 12.6 full scholarships per squad.

There are 146 NAIA colleges that offer track programs with 12 full scholarships per squad and 133 NJCAA colleges being able to offer a whopping 20 full scholarships.

Although there is a lot of choice and spaces available to track and field student athletes there is also a big demand and plenty of competition for those scholarships, with college coaches being contacted by hundreds of students every day.  Below we have listed the range of times/distances/points that the current roster of college athletes recorded in their recent respective national or regional championships, which will give you an idea on the level of competition that you need to be in order to be considered a realistic prospect by a college coach.

Womens Track and Field Scholarships

In the womens NCAA division one there are 314 track and field programs and due to the Title IX rule in college sport, the college coaches often have 18 full athletic scholarships available to spread out amongst its team.

In the NCAA division two there are currently 160 colleges with track programs, with each able to offer a maximum of 12.6 full track and field scholarships.  

The NAIA has 152 programs and can offer 12 full scholarships and the NJCAA has 135 programs with 20 full track scholarships.

The main difference in standard as you can see from the table below between the NCAA division one colleges and the rest is not necessarily the standard at the top-end, it is rather the strength in depth of its student-athletes through out their respective colleges and conferences. The times/distances/points in the table are from the recent national championships and will give you a great idea on the level that you need to be in order for college coaches to look at you as a serious prospective scholarship athlete.
